Plot summary

This is the gripping and emotionally charged story of Tyke, a circus elephant that went on a rampage in Honolulu in 1994, killed her trainer in front of thousands of spectators and died in a hail of gunfire. Her break for freedom - filmed from start to tragic end - traumatised a city and ignited a global battle over the use of animals in the entertainment industry. Looking at what made Tyke snap, the film goes back to meet the people who knew her and were affected by her death - former trainers and handlers, circus industry insiders, witnesses to her rampage, and animal rights activists for whom Tyke became a global rallying cry. Like the classic animal rebellion film King Kong, Tyke is the central protagonist in a tragic but redemptive drama that combines trauma, outrage, insight and compassion. Ultimately, this moving documentary raises fundamental questions about our deep and mysterious connection to other species.

Changed my mind

This documentary show us why we shouldn't use wild animals for circus!! I saw the documentary with tears in my eyes.

Great idea, bad execution

The documentary's point is very simples and what you'd expect: the way animals are treated in circuses is bad and they should not be used in circuses, they should be left in the wild, where they're happy. Good idea. But the way the directors tried to makes us feel empathy with Tyrone, Tyke's trainer is absolutely disgusting. They're censuring animal abuse while trying to force compassion with the exact man who abused them. If the target audience is the unthinking overly-sensitive who fall in love by someone as long as some cheap emotional music is cued in, no matter what words come out of their mouths, they did a great job.

Heartbreakingly amazing

This documentary was one of the best that I've ever seen. Be prepared to get very depressed after viewing it. It's an expertly crafted piece of powerful filmmaking, but seeing the footage of Tyke's death will haunt you for life. Your heart will break into a million pieces and you'll burst into tears for days afterwards. The real footage of the events of that tragic day are so difficult to watch, but they provide an amazing record of what happened. I didn't like the way the trainer Tyrone was portrayed in an almost heroic light, though. He's just as responsible for all of the abuse she had to endure over the years.

I'm so happy that Tyke got her revenge on the disgusting monsters who abused her for years and went down fighting, even if it cost Tyke her life in the end. I hope this beautiful majestic soul is finally at peaceful rest in the hands of her creator.
