Moreover it's a bird dog

The one thing we learn from The Biscuit Eater is what a Biscuit Eater is. It's a dog that is untrainable and steals eggs. Not good to keep dogs and chickens together, make sure the chickens are protected.

Young Johnny Whitaker and George Spell have such a dog, but they think the label is an aspersion on the dog's character. He's trainable as a hunting dog and they're going to prove it. All this to the amusement of parents Earl Holliman and Patricia Crowley for Whittaker and Beah Richards, Spell's widowed mom.

I did like the chemistry between the boys in the film, they come across as real and genuine.

Rounding out the cast are Lew Ayres, the sportsman for whom Holliman trains hunting dogs, Mantan Moreland as a snoopy butler, Clifton James as a mean neighbor.

Cannot forget Godfrey Cambridge though as a hustling gas station owner who is forever got a cigar in his mouth and is quite a character. You have to see how he hustles Lew Ayres and how he wheedles free meals from Beah Richards.

The Biscuit Eater is a nice family film in the Disney tradition.

The adventures of a boy's best friend, his human and his dog.

TV's Johnny Whittaker and George Spell are a nice team as two young kids, both a white and black boy, who maintain a strong friendship as they turn a dog from an egg eating lazy good-for-nothing mutt into a champion bird dog. their adventures are touching and their performances are swell, bringing a lot of heart to this Disney movie. There are films that you remember from their childhood from one particular scene or another, and for me, this is one of them. I recall seeing in the bird hunting contest where Whitaker who, realizing the dog is about to be dismissed, cruelly calls him a biscuit eater which the dog obviously understands, making him become withdrawn. "Biscuit eater" was a slang term for animals who ate raw eggs, and being known as a biscuit eater in the country would give a dog a bad reputation.

in addition to the two boys, there are some great performances by the adult actors. Earl Holliman and Patricia Crowley play Whitaker's parents, mostly understanding, but strict when necessary. The always beautiful Beah Richards play Spell's mother, a gentle woman who helps give the dog a name, and who is there for both boys when they need her kindness and understanding. Veteran actor Lew Ayres has a small role as holloman's boss, and Clifton James as memorable as a cruel, cranky neighbor. It's a simple story, previously made by Paramount in 1940, not great by any means, and perhaps a bit dated. but there are many touching moments that you will not soon forget, particularly the two boys friendship and their love for the dog.
